ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

On October 11, 2018, the Music Modernization Act (MMA) was signed into law, a historic moment for the music industry. This groundbreaking legislation would not have been possible without the efforts of Dina LaPolt and Michelle Lewis to protect the rights of music creators in the digital streaming era.

Dina and Michelle will offer a comprehensive review of the MMA, including: how the MMA will impact songwriters and independent music publishers, the formation of the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC), new licenses issued by the MLC, overhaul of the royalty rate approval process, and the copyright office’s role in implementing these changes.

As always in the Los Angeles Chapter events, an informal “around the table” setting over lunch invites discussion, comment and questions from attendees.

SPEAKERS:

Dina LaPolt is a top music attorney representing high-profile clients such as Britney Spears, Steven Tyler, and deadmau5. Dina is intimately involved in legislative advocacy on behalf of music creators, and was recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Copyright Office for her role in spearheading the MMA. Dina has received numerous industry accolades from Billboard, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter, and was chosen as a Co-Executive of the Year for Billboard’s 2018 Women in Music.

Michelle Lewis
is an Emmy-nominated, Peabody Award-winning songwriter, and composer who has written hit songs for artists including Cher, Amy Grant, and Little Mix. In 2014, Michelle co-founded Songwriters of North America (SONA), a non-profit advocacy group that challenged the abysmal licensing rates paid to music creators from digital streaming companies, and was instrumental in passing the MMA. She currently serves on ASCAP’s Board of Directors.

Stephanie Krause (Moderator) is an entertainment attorney and member of the LA Chapter of the CSUSA Planning Committee. Prior to law school, she worked at ASCAP in Los Angeles. Stephanie is currently in-house at Paramount Television.
