This panel will focus on the protection of copyright rights in characters, and will include discussion of strategies for developing a character into a copyrightable property, using trademark law to complement copyright protection, and addressing the challenges posed by expiring copyright terms.  The panel will also explore considerations for parties desiring to use public domain literary characters, including the pitfalls associated with evaluating public domain status.
