Please join us for a lightning round of recent developments in copyright law affecting companies in the video game industry, including practical tips and best practices for lawyers who work for or represent companies in this space. Comprised of four longstanding members of the Video Game Bar Association, this panel will cover topical issues facing game companies, both domestically and abroad, including: traps for the unwary when using independent contractors for game development; DMCA (and corollary international schemes) takedown trends and the unique challenges faced by content providers and platforms serving the game industry; copyright (and analogous rights) differences between the US, EU and Canada, including work for hire, moral rights and audit rights; why, when and how to secure copyright registrations in mobile games; developments in the EU’s copyright directive; and last but certainly not least, tips and tricks for advising clients on endlessly entertaining issues around using third party content and UGC in games, implicating fair use and the First Amendment defenses (and their analogous versions in other jurisdictions).
