ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The Copyright Office is in the middle of fundamentally changing how it does business to meet the modern needs of its customers and users. It is reconsidering how it functions, how it is organized, and how to adapt new technologies to its users’ needs. At the same time, Congress is in the middle of its own modernization efforts and is considering major changes to the music laws with the proposed Music Modernization Act. Copyright Office Attorney-Advisor John Riley will discuss where both Congress and the Office are in their modernization efforts, and what it means for you.

John Riley

Prior to joining the Copyright Office in 2013, John worked as the Senior Manager of Intellectual Property Enforcement at the United States Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center. John earned his LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from The George Washington University Law School and his JD from the Penn State University, Dickinson School of Law. At the Copyright Office, John has contributed to the United States Government’s briefs in the Petrella and Aereo Supreme Court cases, the “Copyright Small Claims,” “Software-Enabled Consumer Products,” and “Section 1201 of Title 17” reports, and the Office’s triannual Section 1201 Rulemakings. John was also a co-author of the Office’s report “Copyright and the Music Marketplace” and has been heavily involved in advising Congress on the Music Modernization Act. He has been recognized by the American Intellectual Property Law Association for his distinguished service and contributions in the field of intellectual property law.
