ABOUT THE PROGRAM:  

Creative expression is practically limitless when it comes to the ways we dress and decorate the human body, from the ink and makeup we use on our skin to the color and style of the clothes we wear. But in industries as fast-paced as fashion and beauty, are creators being left behind when it comes to copyright? Please join our expert panel to discuss a few of the key copyright issues that artists and designers currently encounter in fashion, body art, and makeup.

 

SPEAKERS:  


Howard S. Hogan
is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and is Chair of the Fashion, Retail and Consumer Products group.  Mr. Hogan is a frequent lecturer and writer on intellectual property and technology-related issues.  He co-authored Fashion Law and Business: Brands and Retailers, a treatise published by the Practising Law Institute, and has also been a speaker at meetings of the International Trademark Association; the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Conference in Austin, Texas; the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law; and Comic-Con San Diego.  Mr.  Hogan received his J.D., cum laude, from New York University School of Law.
 

 

Yolanda M. King is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Northern Illinois University College of Law, where she also teaches copyright law, entertainment law, intellectual property law, and trademark law. Dean King has written extensively on copyright protection of tattoos, and she is a frequent speaker on emerging issues in intellectual property law. Before joining the NIU faculty, Dean King practiced intellectual property law at Husch Blackwell Sanders Welsh & Katz and Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione in Chicago, Illinois. She is currently of counsel at Advitam IP, an intellectual property law firm in Chicago, and she is a member of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, International Trademark Association, and Society for American Law Teachers. Dean King is also a 2002 graduate of Harvard Law School. 

 

Brian G. Murphy is a Partner at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz PC. His practice focuses on copyright, trademark, right of publicity/right of privacy, false advertising, unfair competition, and defamation. Mr. Murphy is a frequent and popular speaker on advertising, entertainment, and intellectual property issues, and he brings his expertise on the copyrightability of hair and makeup to today’s panel. Mr. Murphy previously taught courses on entertainment, copyright and intellectual property at Fordham University Law School and New York Law School and has lectured at the Parsons School of Design. He has also received praise in Chambers USA, The Legal 500 and The Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Murphy is a 1992 graduate from New York University School of Law, cum laude.
