Postponed: Beg Forgiveness or Ask Permission? Navigating Copyright Licensing Issues

When: March 25, 2020 at 11:30am - 1:00pm EDT - This event has passed

About the event:

The Copyright Society is closely monitoring developments relating to the COVID-19 coronavirus. As our top priority is the health, safety, and well-being of our attendees, we will be postponing this event.

In the digital age, understanding the licensing of copyrighted content is more relevant than ever in pursuits ranging from entertainment to education and software to social media. As the internet continues to evolve and our use of copyrighted content along with it, it is increasingly important to both rightsholders and content users to understand the mechanics of copyright licensing, fair use, and the balance between the two. This panel will evaluate the scope of copyright licensing in our online world, examining the tension between content users “begging permission” through obtaining a license, or risking the need to “ask forgiveness” by staking their use on fair use grounds.
