Michele Woods, Director of the WIPO Copyright Law Division, will report on a number of important WIPO initiatives, including the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances, the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise Print Disabled, and the ongoing negotiations toward an updated treaty to protect broadcast signals from piracy.

After her talk, Michele will sit down for a candid conversation with International Chapter Co-ChairsCasey Chisick and Martin Schaefer to discuss other international copyright developments.

About the Speakers:

Michele Woods is the Director of the Copyright Law Division at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland.  She serves as Secretary of the WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR), and was part of the Secretariat for the Diplomatic Conferences that adopted the texts of the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances in June 2012 and the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled in 2013.  The Copyright Law Division supports WIPO Members in activities related to the ratification and implementation of these and other WIPO copyright treaties.  The Division also provides legislative advice on copyright and related rights at the request of WIPO Members. Before joining WIPO, Michele was the Associate Register for Policy and International Affairs in the United States Copyright Office.

Casey Chisick is co-leader of the Copyright & Entertainment practice at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP in Toronto. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property (Copyright). Casey is recognized as a leading practitioner by Best Lawyers, Chambers Global, Who’s Who Legal, and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and as an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property. He is currently a Trustee of CSUSA, a member of its Executive Committee, and co-chair of its newly-established International Chapter.

 

Martin Schaefer is a partner at Boehmert & Boehmert in Berlin, Germany. He previously worked as in-house counsel for Bundesverband Musikindustrie e. V. (German Federal Music Industry Association – BVMI) and as Vice President, Legal Counsel Europe at BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group). He frequently works on music industry matters and collective and individual administration of rights; in particular, the law concerning collecting societies and collecting agencies. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles on copyright matters in journals and other publications.
