Join us for the first meeting of our International Chapter. Featuring a roster of expert speakers from Europe, Canada, and the U.S., the program will begin with a panel presentation followed by audience discussion. Topics will include:

• Pan-European music publishing and collective licensing
• Comparative analysis of music licensing in the U.S. and Canada

We will then hold a brief business meeting to discuss future plans for the chapter.

Alexander Wolf is
Executive Managing Director of SOLAR Music Rights Management, the newly
established joint venture between PRS for Music (UK), GEMA (Germany)
and Sony/ATV. From 2007 to 2014, he was Managing Director of CELAS GmbH,
a joint venture between PRS for Music (UK) and GEMA (Germany)
concerning EMI-Publishing for licensing certain rights for online use.
From 1994 ro 2006, he served as GEMA’s Deputy Director, Department of
Industry, Legal Advisor for International Legal Affairs, and Head of its
Online-Section.

Frank Scibilia is
a Partner at Pryor Cashman LLP, where he regularly advises clients on
complex copyright issues, and negotiates and drafts agreements licensing
content, including licenses for exploiting sound recordings and musical
compositions via various new media platforms and services. He has
extensive experience relating to worldwide exploitation of music and
other music-related entertainment products.

Ryan Lehning is Director of International at SoundExchange, responsible for coordinating all aspects of SoundExchange’s international activities on behalf of the company’s member artists and labels. Prior to focusing exclusively on international efforts, Ryan was Senior Counsel at SoundExchange where, in addition to addressing international transactions, he also provided general corporate and copyright legal counsel. Before becoming a part of SoundExchange’s legal team, Ryan served as counsel with SONY BMG Music Entertainment in New York. There, he gained experience handling copyright, trademark, e-commerce, new media, and other intellectual property matters. Prior to SONY BMG, Ryan was an associate in the law firm of Smith & Metalitz LLP in Washington DC where his practice focused on domestic and international copyright matters for a diverse portfolio of clients in the music, film, television, software, and book publishing industries. In addition, Ryan served as counsel for the Coalition on Online Accountability, a group working to ensure the enforcement of copyright protection in the online world. Ryan is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (2002) and Belmont University (1997).

Gilles Daigle is the General Counsel of the Society of Composers, Authors and Music
Publishers of Canada (SOCAN). Gilles’ past experience includes working
for the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC) as Commission Counsel; acting as Co-Counsel on many high-profile
copyright infringement cases; and notably — a career marker and 2010
Copyright Case of the Year — representing SOCAN on the Copyright Boards
decision to allow collection of royalties for music use by Canadian
satellite radio services.

Casey Chisick is co-leader of the Copyright & Entertainment practice at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP in Toronto. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property (Copyright). Casey is recognized as a leading practitioner by Best Lawyers, Chambers Global, Who’s Who Legal, and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and as an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property. He is currently a Trustee of CSUSA, a member of its Executive Committee, and co-chair of its newly-established International Chapter.

Martin Schaefer is a partner at Boehmert & Boehmert in Berlin, Germany. He previously worked as in-house counsel for Bundesverband Musikindustrie e. V. (German Federal Music Industry Association – BVMI) and as Vice President, Legal Counsel Europe at BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group). He frequently works on music industry matters and collective and individual administration of rights; in particular, the law concerning collecting societies and collecting agencies. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles on copyright matters in journals and other publications.

The meeting will take place on the first day of our Mid-Winter Meeting, which officially begins at 3pm at the Hutton Hotel. The International Chapter Lunch takes place at ASCAP, not at the Hutton Hotel.
