Our panelists will discuss some of the implications of the proposed EU copyright directive, impacts of the Supreme Court’s Fourth Estate decision, content protection and enforcement, performance rights on new platforms, jurisdictional issues, remedies, and much more. SPEAKERS: Dan Cooper is SVP, Intellectual Property, Head of IP Analysis & Insights, at NBCUniversal. Based in Universal City, California, he oversees a team of lawyers and analysts that advise and collaborate with NBCUniversal’s entertainment divisions worldwide (across live action & animated film & television, theme park, and merchandising) on production, distribution and ancillary rights issues, with a focus on copyright matters that arise throughout the entire lifecycle of IP. Prior to NBCUniversal, Dan’s in house/entertainment experience also included working at Paramount Pictures as SVP, Intellectual Property and as VP, Business & Legal Affairs at Fox Interactive Media/Myspace. Before making the transition in-house, Dan worked as an IP litigator at the Los Angeles office of Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp and Arnold & Porter. He is a graduate of Columbia University for both college and law school and is a Trustee of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. Gabe Miller is currently the Senior Vice President of Intellectual Property & Content Protection at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, California. In that capacity, he is responsible for the day-to-day management of the studio’s intellectual property group, which includes the research, rights, and records division, the product rights team, the content protection and anti-piracy program, and the production clearances team. In addition, Gabe supports groups within the studio with respect to copyright, trademark, patent, and security issues across all stages of content development, production, and distribution. Before joining Paramount, Gabe was in private practice in Los Angeles as an associate with the law firms of Irell & Manella LLP, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, and Kendall Brill & Klieger LLP. Mr. Miller is a former law clerk to the Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson (U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit) and a graduate of Stanford University (B.A., M.A.), Columbia Law School (J.D.), and the London School of Economics (LL.M.). Jordan Paul is Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs at Vubiquity, Inc. At Vubiquity, Jordan negotiates and drafts licensing and content processing agreements with studios, networks,and live event promoters and distribution agreements with MVPDs and OTT Providers. Prior to his in-house work at Vubiquity, Jordan worked in IP and media litigation practices in New York and Los Angeles. Eleanor Lackman (moderator) is a nationally recognized practitioner in IP, media, and entertainment law. As a Partner at Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams & Sheppard, her practice encompasses media and entertainment defense, copyright and trademark litigation and counseling, and trademark branding, prosecution, and licensing. As part of her commitment to the media, entertainment, sports, and technology industries, Eleanor splits her time between CDAS’s two offices in New York and California, and she is admitted to practice in both states. Eleanor has served as co-chair of the largest chapter of the Copyright Society of the USA (CSUSA) and is presently serving her second term with the organization as a trustee. She has served consecutive terms with the International Trademark Association’s Internet and International Amicus Committees, sits on the Copyright Alliance’s Amicus Committee, is a part of the Board of Advisors to Fordham’s Center on Law and Information Policy, and has been a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences for over 15 years.
