About the Program:

What copyright issues keep in-house counsel up at night?  Our panel drawing from tech, television, music, and publishing will present a thoughtful discussion about current issues in copyright and IP law that most impact in-house counsel. Join us for a wide ranging discussion of in-house issues like the use of photos across social media channels, the current state of music licensing and litigation, plans to update the Copyright Act, digital versus print issues, and the import of foreign-market copyrighted works post-Kirtsaeng. Our panel brings decades of copyright experience to bear on these issues with the unique perspective of how best to resolve issues — or perhaps more correctly how best to mitigate risk in light of business objectives — as an in-house lawyer.

The Copyright Society of the USA is a New York State and Pennsylvania certified CLE provider.

Panelists:

Joseph P. Salvo (Moderator)
Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Sesame Workshop

Joseph P. Salvo currently serves as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Sesame Workshop, the home of Sesame Street, where he has responsibility for Business & Legal Affairs and Government Affairs. Prior to Sesame Workshop, Joe served as General Counsel of HiT Entertainment, an international children’s entertainment company. Between 2012 and 2015, while serving as HiT’s General Counsel, he also served as Vice President & Associate General Counsel at Mattel, Inc., (which acquired HiT in February, 2012) with shared responsibility for the Mattel Legal & Business Affairs group. Joe also spent 13 years previously working for a combination of Sony Music, Arista Records and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, where he was involved in a wide variety of contract, licensing and intellectual property issues, and started his career as a litigator at Weil Gotshal & Manges in NY, where he specialized in copyright and IP litigation. Joe served as President of the Copyright Society of the USA from June 2012-14, and has been an adjunct professor of law, teaching Entertainment Law at St John’s University School of Law, since 2001. He is a frequent lecturer at law schools, bar associations and colleges on copyright, entertainment law and entertainment law issues. Joe is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and St. John’s University School of Law, both in NY.

Caleb Donaldson
Senior Copyright Counsel, Google

Caleb Donaldson is copyright counsel at Google. The copyright team oversees copyright issues across Google’s entire product offering, performing functions including product counseling, antipiracy efforts, litigation support, and public-policy initiatives. Caleb received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and clerked for Judge Jeffrey Howard on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. In a prior career, Caleb was a pioneer in Internet publishing: a member of the launch teams of CNET and of Hotwired, the first web site in the world to carry banner advertising.


David Jacoby
SVP, Business and Legal Affairs, Sony Music

David Jacoby is SVP of Business and Legal Affairs at Sony Music, where he is responsible for managing litigation and advising the Sony Music labels on a variety of intellectual property and contractual matters. He works very closely with Sony Music’s Global Digital Business group on music licensing transactions, and on content protection and anti-piracy issues. He oversees Sony Music’s strategy on issues involving the recapture of copyrights, and consults on royalty reporting and audit issues. Jacoby regularly engages with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on a number of industry-wide legislative and legal issues, and is responsible for working with SoundExchange with respect to the company’s involvement in various rate-setting proceedings before the Copyright Royalty Board. Prior to joining Sony Music in 2001, Jacoby was in private practice at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler, and before that, Townley & Updike.


Brendan Kehoe
Global Head, Copyright & Trademarks, Bloomberg LP

Brendan is the Global Head of Copyright & Trademarks at Bloomberg LP. His group oversees copyright, trademark, and digital enforcement for all Bloomberg businesses worldwide, including the Bloomberg Terminal (data licensing) and Bloomberg Media (news) divisions.  Brendan has deep knowledge and experience across a broad spectrum of specialties, including developing IP asset portfolios, supporting strategic transactions, implementing brand enforcement and litigation initiatives, and establishing effective regulatory compliance programs. Brendan was previously in-house counsel with Pearson Education, Inc., where he helped resolve numerous copyright litigations and developed effective, forward-looking compliance programs. Brendan also worked in Kirkland & Ellis LLP’s Copyright, Trademark, Internet, and Advertising group, helping secure wins for clients including the Associated Press in the Obama Hope poster matter and The Tetris Company in copyright and trademark enforcement litigation.

Senior Vice President, Content & Production Risk, NBCUniversal

Gillian Lusins is a Senior Vice President in the Content Production and Risk Group at NBCUniversal. Gillian joined NBC in 1997. She advises clients and other lawyers at NBCUniversal on marketing and production related matters arising out of the development, production and distribution of a wide variety of television programs and other content. NBCUniversal is one of the world’s leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production and marketing of entertainment, news and information to a global audience. NBCUniversal owns and operates a valuable portfolio of news and entertainment television networks, a premier motion picture company, significant television production operations, a leading television stations group, world-renowned theme parks, and a suite of leading Internet-based businesses.
