Fireside Chat with Chris Callison-Burch

When: April 10, 2024 at 5:30pm - 7:00pm EDT - This event has passed

Generative AI had its breakthrough moment in November 2022 with the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Since then, lawyers, lawmakers, and businesses have been trying to reckon with the potentially huge implications of generative AI for copyright law. Questions abound about how and under what circumstances the outputs or training of generative AI infringe, whether fair use protects some or all of the work of building and deploying a large-language model, and whether AI systems that have already been deployed can be “retrained” to eliminate reliance on copyrighted material. While many of those questions will be addressed in the courts in the coming years, everyone interested in generative AI should try their best to understand them. Professor Chris Callison-Burch of the University of Pennsylvania is a recognized expert on generative AI, and recently testified in front of Congress about some of the potential implications for copyright law of this emerging and important technology. Join us for a discussion with him to get an accessible explanation of how the technology works, what it is capable of, and how it might change copyright law—or vice versa.
