BRACE MEMORIAL LECTURE Given by Christopher Jon Sprigman “What Does Antitrust’s Revival Mean for Copyright?” Sponsored by Since 2013, Professor Christopher Jon Sprigman has been a Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law and Policy at New York University School of Law, where he teaches intellectual property law, antitrust law, competition policy, and comparative constitutional law. He is also the Reporter for the American Law Institute’s ongoing work on the Restatement of the Law of Copyright. After leaving law school, Prof. Sprigman clerked for Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and for Justice Lourens H. W. Ackermann of the Constitutional Court of South Africa; he was also a lecturer in Constitutional Law at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Upon returning to the United States, Prof. Sprigman was counsel at the Department of Justice in the Antitrust Division (1999-2001), where he participated in the government’s case against Microsoft, U.S. v. Microsoft, 253 F.3d 34 (D.C. Cir. 2001), for monopolizing the PC market primarily through the legal and technical restrictions it imposed on PC manufacturers and users to uninstall Internet Explorer and use other programs. Following early stints at Davis Polk & Wardwell (N.Y. 1995-98) and King & Spaulding (Wash., D.C. 2001-2004), Prof. Sprigman was a Fellow at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society (Palo Alto, CA 2003-2010) and a Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law (2005-2013). Prof. Sprigman is a prolific author, lecturer, and Op-Ed writer on a wide area of subjects, including copyright, trademarks, antitrust, resale royalties, the fashion industry, and the effect of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death on the Supreme Court. ABOUT THE LECTURE The Donald C. Brace Memorial Lecture is given in memory of the publisher Donald C. Brace, who founded Harcourt, Brace & Co. in 1919. Apart from his interest in the art of literature, Donald Brace was deeply interested in copyright legislation, the protection of creative talent, and freedom of the press. In 1950, he was awarded the Columbia University Medal of Excellence in recognition of his distinguished contributions to publishing. This series was originally established by a gift from his daughter, Mrs. Donna Brace Ogilvie. For fifty years, the Brace Lectures on domestic copyright have featured leading figures in the field, including judges, practitioners, policymakers, publishers and academics.
