Detroit: A Clear View of Blurred Lines

Join us for a special event in Detroit! The Midwest Chapter of the Copyright Society of the USA and the State Bar of Michigan Arts, Communications, Entertainment & Sports Section will present a review of the judicial ruling in the “Blurred Lines” case, as well as a discussion by music and copyright experts on the impact of that ruling on the creation and performance of music as well as on the strength and effect of copyright protection.

Speakers

Judith Finell is a musicologist and the president of Judith Finell MusicServices, Inc., a music consulting firm in New York.  She was the testifying musicologist for the Marvin Gaye estate in the “Blurred Lines” case against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke in the 2015 trial in federal court in Los Angeles. Judith Finell’s firm regularly advises entertainment company clients on licensing and risk avoidance in copyright matters, including HBO, Sony Pictures, Disney, Grey Advertising, Lionsgate, LucasFilms, CBS, and others.  She has testified often as an expert witness and has consulted in various litigations involving copyrights within the music industry for over 20 years.

Tom Leavens is a partner in Leavens, Strand & Glover, LLC, where he is involved in transactions, counseling, and litigation in all areas of performing, visual, and literary expression, new media, intellectual property, and technology. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University School of Law and at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah.  He is the author of the book “Music Law for the General Practitioner,” published by the American Bar Association in 2013.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds must be requested in writing at least three business days before the event. Refunds will not be issued after that point. Unfortunately, we will not be able to credit your registration payment toward a future event, but you may allow another person attend in your place.
