Does copyright protection safeguard creative output without stifling new adaptions? Please join us for a unique panel discussion bringing together lawyers and the dance community to discuss copyright issues affecting dance companies, choreographers, and dancers. In addition to exploring the relevant legal framework, the discussion will also highlight the relationship between the cultural and business norms of dance-affiliated entities and copyright protection. The panel will be followed by a networking reception sponsored by Pepper Hamilton LLP. 1.5 Pennsylvania and New York State CLE Credits Provided Speakers Laura Genovese, Esq.(Moderator), Principal at K & G Law LLC (www.kassgen.com), provides trademark, copyright, trade dress, domain name, and internet advice, including prosecution and enforcement. She develops and oversees implementation of strategic plans for businesses. She also counsels and represents clients in litigation matters before the courts and inter partes proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. She has initiated and defended proceedings before domain name arbitration panels under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). Meredith Rainey, Philadelphia-based choreographer and former Pennsylvania Ballet Soloist, has been commissioned to create works for the Pennsylvania Ballet, Incolballet (Ballet Clásico Nacional de Colombia), the Brandywine Ballet, Ballet X, the Delaware Ballet, Hubbard Street 2, and Phrenic New Ballet. His work has been performed throughout North and South America and Europe, including at the Miami International Ballet Festival, the International Ballet Festival of Ecuador, the First and Second International Ballet Festival of Calí, (Colombia) and in Madrid, Spain. He has won numerous awards, including the 1995 & 2002 PA Council on the Arts Fellowship Grant for Choreography, 2001 Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Artist as Catalyst Grant, 2002 Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts, and the 2010 Dance Advance Grant, and he was a finalist for the 2003 Pew Fellowship in the Arts. In 2011, he won The Joyce Theater Foundation’s the A.W.A.R.D. Show! Philadelphia. Elena M. Paul, Esq., is the Director of Legal & Business Affairs at the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation who furthers the pioneering vision of Alvin Ailey through the activities of two dance companies, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ailey II, The Ailey School, Ailey Arts In Education & Community Programs and the activities of The Ailey Extension. In addition to her role as General Counsel and Secretary, she manages Ailey’s Human Resources Department. Prior to joining Ailey, Ms. Paul was the Executive Director of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Executive Director of Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts, University Counsel in the the University of Maryland, College Park Office of the President, and an attorney at two major national law firms, where she practiced corporate and real estate law. Ms. Paul received her BA in Economics from Davidson College, phi beta kappa, and her JD from Harvard Law School. Ms. Paul serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Producing and Documentary Programs at the New York Film Academy and taught at the Fordham Law School Fashion Law Institute, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Pratt Institute of Art & Design and Brooklyn Law School. Iquail Shaheed is the founder and executive artistic director of DANCE IQUAIL!. As a professional dancer, Iquail has worked with internationally acclaimed companies such as Compagnie Thor (Brussels), The Sean Curran Company, Ronald K Brown/ Evidence, and The Fred Benjamin Dance Company. He has also appeared in various Broadway productions and in film, television and print. Currently Mr. Shaheed is on faculty at The Ailey School, Steps on Broadway, and Harlem School for the Arts. Over the years, Iquail has been awarded for his many achievements including Lower Manhattan Cultural Council grant awards, The Caroline H. Newhouse Award, The Suzanne and Larry Engman Second Place Award, The Philadelphia Dance Award (Rocky), The Marion D. Cuyjet Award, NAACP ACT-SO National Silver Medal, and The Promising Artist Award.
