For
decades, music publishers, record labels and collecting societies have
administered their rights on a country-by-country basis. This system functioned
well when services generally operated within a single territory.However,
advances in digital technology have enabled the advent of multi-territorial
services, sparking a demand for “one-stop shopping” for the licensing
of digital music rights.

While each country has its own national copyright law, they are harmonized to
some extent by the Berne Convention and other international
agreements.Recently, however, the European Union has made further efforts
to harmonize the process of cross-border licensing throughout Europe.

Through the lens of digital music, this panel presentation will address how
copyright licensing in the European Union differs from US practice, and how
copyright licensing developments in Europe have impacted digital content
delivery across borders.
