More and more, visual artists’ works are being displayed and disseminated online.  Copyright holders have struggled to keep up with new digital channels, but are now employing increasingly innovative licensing solutions to ensure they receive payment for use of their works.

Moderator:

Bill Rosenblatt is a globally recognized authority on technology issues pertaining to intellectual property in the digital age. He has contributed to standards initiatives related to content identification, metadata, and rights.  Bill has served as an expert witness in litigations related to copyright, digital content and security technologies, in federal court and before the Copyright Royalty Board and the PTO.  He has testified before and advised public policy entities on digital copyright and technology issues on three continents.Bill is author of the book Digital Rights Management: Business and Technology (Wiley), technical books published by O’Reilly, and several whitepapers, book chapters and journal articles on technologies related to digital media and copyright. He writes the blog Copyright and Technology and is a media and entertainment contributor to Forbes.
In addition to the Copyright and Technology Conferences that Bill chairs, he has been an invited speaker at many conferences, including the World Economic Forum (Davos) and other events worldwide. He has been quoted in periodicals in eight countries and has appeared on ABC News and on National Public Radio. 
Prior to founding Giantsteps in 2000, Bill was Chief Technology Officer of Fathom, a knowledge destination web site for lifelong learners backed by Columbia University, the London School of Economics, and other scholarly institutions. SPEAKERs:

Will Clark is Assistant General Counsel – Licensing at Shutterstock, Inc., where he is the senior legal stakeholder participating in the ongoing evolution of Shutterstock’s commercial products, including Shutterstock’s core content license agreements, customized enterprise agreements, and the ongoing integration of new products and services developed and/or acquired by Shutterstock. He also supports Shutterstock’s business and corporate development teams, providing counsel on prospective strategic transactions and partnerships, and supporting the resulting negotiations. He has been at Shutterstock since 2010 and witnessed firsthand the maturation and evolution of the stock visual content space.

 

 

 

 

Ashima A. Dayal is a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice Group of Davis & Gilbert. Her practice concentrates on advising the firm’s advertising, media and entertainment clients on all aspects of copyright, trademark, right of publicity and defamation law. Additionally, she has considerable experience resolving complex issues and disputes raising false advertising, unfair competition, misappropriation of idea, e-commerce and contract concerns, and she regularly participates in all manner of civil litigation (including infringement suits and consumer class actions), government investigations and other adversarial proceedings related to these areas of law. Ms. Dayal also counsels clients on entertainment union and guild issues pertaining to television, radio and Internet advertising, and, she has represented numerous creative professionals on matters ranging from intellectual property clearance to licensing negotiations.

Ms. Dayal has been recognized by The Legal 500 United States in the area of Intellectual Property: Copyright for four consecutive years (2014-2017) and in the area of advertising and marketing (2017).  She has also been recognized in Media Law International’s rankings (2015-2018) for her work in the area of media law.

 

 

 

Adrienne Fields is the Director of Legal Affairs for Artists Rights Society (ARS).  ARS represents the intellectual property rights of over 80,000 visual artists and estates from around the world including those of Frank Stella, Jenny Holzer, the Andy Warhol Foundation, the Estate of Pablo Picasso and the Estate of Henri Matisse, among others.  Ms. Fields’ work involves the licensing of artists’ copyrights for various uses including, print, internet, television, advertising, film, theater and merchandise.  She monitors the intellectual property of ARS’s members and enforces their rights against infringing users.  Ms. Fields works closely with her counterparts at ARS’s sister societies in more than thirty foreign countries to enforce visual artists’ rights globally.  Ms. Fields is also the Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Landslide® Magazine, a publication of the American Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Section, and a member of the ABA’s Content Advisory Board, which oversees all ABA-IPL Section publications.  Ms. Fields was elected a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 2018.  She received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2016 and an Art Law Alumni Award in 2013 from her alma mater, Brooklyn Law School.  Ms. Fields holds an M.A. degree from Christie’s Education in Connoisseurship and Art Market Studies and a B.A. from Brandeis University.
  

 

 

Pippa Loengard is the Deputy Director of the Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts and a Lecturer-in-Law at Columbia Law School where her teaching and research focus on copyright, especially as it pertains to the visual arts.Ms. Loengard was a two-term member of the Art Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and has served on the Executive Committee of the EASLS section of the New York State Bar Association.She graduated from Columbia where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and an Articles Editor on the Columbia Journal of Law and the Arts. Additionally, she holds an LL.M. in Taxation from N.Y.U. School of Law.  She was in private practice at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP before joining the Kernochan Center staff. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Loengard worked in television production for several years as an Assistant Director on various episodic shows and as a Coordinating Producer for A&E Television Networks. Ms. Loengard graduated with a degree in History from Cornell University and a Masters Degree in Communication from Stanford University.
