Advancing Your Copyright Career

Copyright is one of the most exciting and rapidly changing fields of intellectual property. Put together by the New York Chapter, this panel features Cynthia Arato, Lawrence Sapadin, and Sean Kim (Moderator), three attorneys who have focused and advanced their careers in a specific area of copyright. The panel will provide insight into the copyright field and how to achieve your career goals at any stage.

SPEAKERS:

Cynthia Arato is an experienced litigator with a practice focusing on IP, media and entertainment, and commercial litigation. Cynthia has successfully represented major corporations and prominent individuals in copyright, trademark, defamation, right of publicity, false advertising, employment, contract, fraud, fiduciary duty, and royalty actions.

Sean Kim is an associate at McGuireWoods where he practices in the areas of Intellectual Property (IP) procurement and counseling, technology transactions, and IP portfolio management. He represents clients in technology, life sciences, manufacturing, and energy industries, with a focus on clients for whom IP is a key asset. His experience includes drafting patent applications, IP licensing agreements, supply and distribution agreements, and software licensing and development agreements. Sean also represents emerging life sciences and technology companies in business organization, corporate finance, and commercial transactions, including capital raising, mergers and acquisitions, and cross-border transactions. Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Sean worked in an in-house legal department of a multinational technology and consulting corporation where he handled patent prosecution and commercialization. Before starting his career in law, Sean spent nearly three years performing research in molecular biology and drug discovery.

 

Lawrence Sapadin has worked as a business and legal affairs executive at several independent film and television distribution companies, and is currently a consultant at Entertainment One U.S. He is also an adjunct professor of IP licensing and drafting at New York Law School. Earlier, he was Executive Director of a national trade association of independent producers, and was founding President and Chair of the Independent Television Service (ITVS), which produces television programming for public television.
