Uwonda S. Carter is a founding partner of Carter Woodard, LLC and a transactional attorney that advises clients on both business and entertainment matters and focuses on securing and negotiating recording, television and film agreements, contracts for licensing, sponsorship and endorsement opportunities and catalog sales and acquisitions. Uwonda’s roster currently includes award winning recording artists, music producers and songwriters, as well as television personalities, television production companies, comedians, authors, fashion companies and entertainment industry executives. Uwonda has become a staple in negotiating music catalog sales/acquisitions and brand sponsorship deal and strategic marketing opportunities for her clients with companies that include, Gap, Target, Chef Boyardee, Finish Line/JD Sports, Budweiser, Nike, FabFitFun, Epic Games, Google Pixel, McDonald’s and YSL Beauty.

Uwonda earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University in 1993 and subsequently earned a Juris Doctorate from Georgia State University College of Law in 1997 where she also studied abroad, enrolled in the Austrian-American Comparative Dispute Resolution Program at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. Uwonda is a member of both the State Bar of Georgia and the State Bar of New York and prior to entering private practice, Uwonda worked as a Staff Attorney for the Contracts, Business and Commercial Law Unit for the City of New York’s Human Resources Department.

In 2017 Uwonda was honored by the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyer Association as its Entertainment Lawyer of the Year and in 2011 by ASCAP for its “Women Behind the Music” series and has been featured in several periodicals including Rolling Out Magazine, Billboard Magazine, The Atlanta Tribune and Playback Magazine. She was a founding member and former vice president of the Black Women in Entertainment Law Foundation; a member of the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyer Association; NARAS (The Recording Academy) and the Entertainment and Sports Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia, where she served as the Entertainment Vice-Chair for six years. In 2023 Carter was included on The Hollywood Reporter’s Power Lawyer list and Variety’s Legal Impact’s list. Also, in 2022 and 2023, Uwonda was honored by Billboard as a Top Music Lawyer. She has been featured in several other publications, including Hits Daily Double, Rolling Out, and Voyage ATL. She also serves on the Host Committee for the Black Music and Entertainment Walk of Fame gala, which honored Ambassador Andrew Young, Danny Glover and Dr. Bobby Jones in February 2023.
