Steve Englund

For almost 35 years, Steve Englund’s practice has focused on protection and commercialization of copyrighted works and new media and technology transactions. He regularly advises copyright owners and users in various industries concerning the application of copyright to new technologies and has represented clients in administrative proceedings before agencies such as the Copyright Office and the Copyright Royalty Board, legislative negotiations, commercial and corporate transactions, and litigation. In recent years, he has often advised clients concerning copyright issues relating to artificial intelligence, including concerning infringement issues implicated by development of generative AI models, potential licensing of AI models, clearance and protection of works containing AI-generated material, and copyright registration issues. Steve serves on the Steering Committee of Jenner & Block’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force.

Called a “copyright guru” by Legal 500, he has been named one of the Best Lawyers in America for copyright law and been recognized in Chambers USA for intellectual property, media and entertainment. He has written extensively on topics relating to copyright and technology, including influential writing concerning the scope of copyright protection for computer programs, the U.S. chapter and global overview of Lexology Panoramic’s treatise on Copyright, and a chapter in BNA’s treatise on Intellectual Property Technology Transfer. During the spring semester of 2024 he served as an Adjunct Professor of copyright law at the Wake Forest University School of Law. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the D.C. Computer Law Forum and Vice-Chair of the Copyright Committee of the District of Columbia Bar.

Mr. Englund graduated from the University of Minnesota, magna cum laude, in Computer Science and Political Science in 1986. In 1989, he received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was Executive Editor of the Michigan Law Review. From 1989-1990, Mr. Englund served as a law clerk to the Honorable Daniel A. Moore, Jr. of the Alaska Supreme Court.
