Sofia Castillo Sofia Castillo is Assistant General Counsel at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC where she advises the Smithsonian’s 21 museums, 9 research centers and National Zoological Park on copyright matters, including content production, licensing, collaborations, distribution and fair use. Previously, she was a member of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp’s Entertainment Transactions Group where she counseled entertainment media and scientific research companies, individual creators and trade associations on copyright transactions and policy. Sofia also served as Assistant General Counsel at the Association of American Publishers and Legal Fellow at the Copyright Alliance where she advocated for the rights of publishers and other creative industries before U.S. Congress and Federal agencies on copyright policy matters, including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, limitations and exceptions, international trade and treaty implementation. Sofia obtained her law degree from American University, Washington College of Law, a master’s degree from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree from Trent University. Sofia is on the Board of Trustees of The Copyright Society (2021-2024) and co-chaired its DC Chapter (2015-2017). She is an active member of the Hispanic Bar Association – DC Chapter.
