Edward Cavazos

Ed Cavazos is the Managing Partner of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman’s Austin office. As a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property section, Ed negotiates complex technology-related transactions and routinely advises on corporate and general business matters, licenses, strategic partnerships, data rights, and privacy issues. A former general counsel at a pioneering internet company, Ed has three decades of experience working on matters involving internet law, e-commerce, software, open-source licensing, and related issues. In recent years, his practice has increasingly involved advising clients on artificial intelligence, video game law (including Web 3.0, and the metaverse), blockchain, and media and entertainment issues. He represents companies ranging from startups that are launching businesses based on cutting-edge technologies to established corporations that are developing, procuring, and integrating new technologies into their existing businesses. In addition to advising clients, Ed serves on Pillsbury’s executive board.

As a complement to his transactional practice, Ed also routinely litigates complex IP disputes, including patent, trade secret, copyright, trademark, contract breach and internet-related claims, and has successfully represented clients in jury trials in both federal and state court. Ed has been an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law since 1998, where he is currently teaches a regular seminar on “The Law of Software, Video Games and Interactive Entertainment.” In 1994, Ed co-authored Cyberspace and the Law: Your Rights and Duties in the On-line World (MIT Press). He is a frequent speaker on the intersection of law and technology.
