Dr. Christian E. Mammen is an IP Litigation partner at Womble Bond Dickinson in San Francisco, where he is Office Managing Partner. Chris has practiced in the Bay Area for 25 years, where he settled after earning a doctorate in law from Oxford and clerking for Ninth Circuit Judge Robert Beezer in Seattle. Chris’ active litigation practice includes representation of companies in artificial-intelligence-related IP disputes. He also speaks and writes frequently on AI and IP related issues.

Chris has held a number of academic positions, including the University of Oxford, UC College of the Law, San Francisco, and UC Berkeley Law School. In the spring of 2024, he led a multidisciplinary working group of Oxford professors and graduate students to prepare a white paper on AI, creativity, and IP protection. His published works include “AI as Inventor” in The Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence (2022), and he serves on a number of IP-related advisory boards and committees, including the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology Advisory Board, and the Silicon Valley Advanced Patent Law Institute Steering Committee. Chris is also a co-founder and past Executive Board member of the Oxford Entrepreneurs Network.

Chris received his J.D. magna cum laude from Cornell Law School in 1993. At Womble, he has also served on the Global Board and has led the IP Litigation practice.
