Speakers

Pete Smits, Senior Intellectual Property Counsel, National Instruments Corporation, has over 20 years of experience in intellectual property litigation and transactional practice, involving patents, trademarks, trade secrets, copyright and other technology law related issues. Over the course of his career, he practiced in Los Angeles with Robbins, Berliner & Carson, which became the Intellectual Property Section of Fulbright & Jaworski in LA, before returning to Austin in 1998, initially joining the IP Section of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld.

Following his time at Akin, Gump, Mr. Smits worked at several start-up companies doing both legal and technical work before joining National Instruments in 2010, where to this day he is the head of their IP section as Senior IP Counsel at NI. During his stay at NI, the IP litigation and transactional practices have made major improvements in efficiency, cost savings and performance.

Mr. Smits started his career as a product engineer with Texas Instruments in Dallas, first earning a BSEE from his home state’s Michigan State University, along with an MBA in Engineering Management during his time at TI, before moving to Austin to secure his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law. He is licensed with the State Bar of Texas and the United States Patent Bar.

Carolyn Radabaugh, Partner, Radabaugh Law Group, has over 25 years of experience in U.S. and international technology law involving hardware, software, manufacturing, telecommunications, semiconductors, data and services, both within major, internationally known law firms as well as technology companies. She was a partner at Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, where she managed the technology licensing practice for the firm’s Texas and central U.S. practice, Of Counsel at Brobeck Phleger & Harrison, and started her legal career as an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. Ms. Radabaugh also was the second ranking attorney at Cisco Systems during its early growth stage, and General Counsel at Edify Corporation. 

After leaving Brobeck, she founded the Radabaugh Law Group, which now represents some three dozen technology companies nationwide, including Bigcommerce, Alchemy Systems, Crossroads Systems, CentraForce, VUV Analytics, Trade Technologies, Pervasive Software (owned by Actian), SmartZip Analytics, JP3 Measurement, PerceptiMed, SoftVu, Illumitex, Geocosm, Cecropia, and EngagedMD. During 2008-2009, Ms. Radabaugh also acted as General Counsel for HelioVolt Corporation. 

Ms. Radabaugh has negotiated and documented transactions with a large number of Global 2000 companies worldwide, universities and national laboratories on behalf of her clients in the licensing of intellectual property and technology assets, corporate partnering, strategic alliances and technology protection. She supports companies in completing license, OEM, VAR, distribution, alliance, development, consulting, SaaS, off-shore outsourcing, referral, end of quarter sales efforts, sales representation agreements, and a wide variety of contracts across the entire spectrum of technology licensing and partnering arrangements.

In addition, she supports due diligence projects and provides IP counseling for acquisitions, mergers and IPO’s.
